SPRING & SUMMER PET TIPS
Warmer weather is upon us.  While these days may bring good times to us, pet owners need to be aware of some potential hazards these seasons can bring to your pet.

Exposure to certain weed killers, insecticides and fertilizers can impose numerous problems for your pet.  Most of these substances are organophosphates.  When ingested, they can cause salivation, tearing, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, and kidney and liver damage.  Pets should be kept off lawns sprayed with these chemicals until the grass has dried.

As the temperature outside climbs remember that your pet is unable to perspire, and depends upon its panting and breathing to get rid of body heat.  To prevent heat stroke, good ventilation, plenty of shade and fresh cool water must be provided, and excessive exercise on dangerously hot days should be eliminated.  Signs of heat stroke range from excessive panting, red gums and tongue, and difficult breathing; to shock, seizures and death.  If you think your pet may have heat stroke, rinse your pet with cool water and transport immediately to receive veterinary care.

Bees, yellow jackets, wasps, hornets, spiders, and fire ants are common problems for pets during the warmer days.  Most insect bites occur on the face and paws as the pet investigates and plays with the insect.  Most reactions manifest as itching with swelling of the face, eyes, and ears.  However, life-threatening reactions can result in difficult breathing, white mucous membranes, and a swollen throat.  If you believe your pet has been bitten or stung, seek veterinary help immediately.  If your pet is prone to allergic reactions, discuss with your veterinarian medications that can be kept at home and given when signs of itching or swelling are noted.

Warmer weather also brings about an explosion in the flea population and a concern for ticks.  Protect you pet against these nasty parasites with easy to us topical products such as Frontline or Revolution.  Ask one of our receptionists to help you determine which product will best fit your pet’s needs.  Don’t wait until flea or tick problems occur-start prevention today.
