DAISY GETS SPAYED
This is the story of one of our patients and her family and the procedure for spaying. We believe in the responsible control of pet reproduction and we offer this procedure in a safe and sterile environment with your pets safety and comfort as our primary concern. Here we will show the step by step procedure so that you too can feel comfortable when your family makes the decision to help prevent unwanted pet reproduction.

Daisy and her family are warmly greeted and receive an explanation of the procedure and the fees.
A presurgical physical examination is performed and the procedure is explained further with any questions from the pets owners being answered.
A blood sample is collected and then forwarded to our lab for analysis to evaluate the health of the animal prior to the anesthetic procedure.
An ECG (electrocardiogram) is performed to measure the rhythm and rate of the heart to deterime if there are any anesthetic contraindications.
Once the veterinarian has reviewed the blood test results and the findings of the ECG, a preanesthetic medication is given by injection. The medication reduces the amount of injectable and inhalant anesthesia required by providing sedation and pain control.
All anesthetic procedures begin by placing an IV catheter. This is an access for the intravenous administration of anesthesia induction solution and for any other medications which could become necessary.
A safe anesthetic solution which has an immediate effect and is quickly metabolized is used.
Once the depth of anesthesia is reached which allows the technicians to pass the endotracheal tube, an inhalation anesthetic is administered.
Each anesthetic machine is equipped with a delivery system providing one of the safest inhalation anesthesia available.

Each anesthetic machine is equipped with a ventilator system which breathes for the patient throughout the duration of the procedure. This provides a significant benefit to the patient by constantly maintaining good air exchange and oxygenation.
All pets undergoing a surgical procedure are placed on a heated circulating water blanket, covered by a circulating water blanket, and have heat pads placed along their sides to maintain proper body temperature. The surgical site is thoroughly prepped for surgery.
Blood pressure, ECG, body temperature, heart rate, and pulse oximetry are monitored closely while under anesthesia.

The surgeon sterilizes hands and suits up in surgical attire. All surgical instruments and drapes are sterilized prior to each procedure and the patient is properly draped.
All surgical procedures are performed with a CO2 laser which seals nerve endings, seals lymphatics, and coagulates small blood vessels. This reduces operative bleeding, post operative pain, and swelling of the surgical area. The surgical procedure is performed by qualified personnel maintaining a standard of excellence in all aspects of surgical principles.
All pets are recovered in a well bedded cage. They are covered to maintain body temperature and closely monitored by qualified veterinary personnel until fully recovered.
Soon our patient is ready to go home. Recovery periods will vary with animals and your doctor can give you the best estimate. Most patients will go home the same day they arrive.
Postoperative concerns and medications are fully discussed with the client family by a technician to assure a smooth transition into home care.
And thus another happy ending to one of many stories of our dedication to your pets care by Veterinary Medical Associates.
